What Should I Do A Month Before I Move?

Moving in 30 days isn’t easy. Usually, homeowners start planning a good long while before the big move date and begin to execute said plan at least a few months out.

But, not everyone is the same, in terms of planning style or time available to do said planning in the first place! That’s exactly the reason we are writing today’s blog, just one month removed from composing a similar piece — the ultimate two-month moving checklist.

So if you find yourself sixty days away from your move, we’ve got the right blog for you and you are only a click away! If, however, you are starting to realize that “doomsday clock” is approaching midnight much more quickly than you anticipated, we’ve got you covered with some simple and effective tips. We’ll help you organize your thoughts so that you know where to start in terms of addressing the most important elements of your move.

Remember, not everything has to be perfect. But if you want a streamlined, stress-free local or long distance move, we are the professional moving company of choice at Friendly Movers. We move people all around the east coast (and the entire country, for that matter), and we have a simple moving process which our customers describe as professional, affordable, and simple!

We’ll say a bit more about that at the end of today’s blog, but for now, let’s dive into our 1-month moving checklist!

FRIENDLY MOVERS’ 30-DAY MOVING CHECKLIST

Below you’ll find a checklist of sorts. Some of it will be very specific, some general, and other parts will be our own two-cents. Given our years of experience in helping people and businesses move from “a to b”, we thought we might as well put some of that industry knowledge and know-how to use for you!

  • Get Serious About Prepping – Here’s the good news: it looks like you are already getting serious about planning and executing your move. How do we know this? You made it to this blog, didn’t you? Give yourself a pat on the back. Alright, now that is done, it’s time for the bad news: you are a little late to the party. But don’t panic! Just get serious about what you have to do in the next month, and you should be fine.
  • Give Yourself At Least An Hour Each Day – Moving is more time-consuming than most people realize, especially if you are responsible for moving your entire family. You aren’t in college anymore, so throwing all of your clothes and other possessions into industrial-strength plastic bags and tossing them into your hatchback just isn’t a reality anymore. That’s why it’s crucial that you knock some items off of your checklist every single day.
  • Shed Light On Your Darkness (Clear The Clutter!) – Let’s get one thing straight here — for the next several weeks, your home is going to look a bit like a warzone. It’s a necessary pain, ladies and gentlemen. So don’t be afraid to clear out the clutter found in your closets, basement, and attic. All the old stuff that hasn’t seen the light of day in ages must step back into the light! We are being dramatic here, but the point is that you should get everything out in the open so you can determine how many boxes and other moving materials you will need.
  • Throw It Out (Or Pack It) – Here comes either the fun part or the extremely difficult part, depending on how you are wired. Some people love throwing out stuff they would classify as junk because they can turn a new leaf and start fresh. Others, conversely, have a difficult time throwing possessions they deem as keepsakes. You don’t have to be a “hoarder,” to feel this way, either. Regardless, some stuff will need to be tossed, but if you find yourself wanting to save a lot without having enough space to keep it, keep in mind that Friendly Movers offers short and long-term storage services!
  • Make A List – Inventorying (if that’s a word) the possessions which you need to move is a fundamental step in your moving process. This is used to determine how much moving supplies, boxes, and other packing materials you will need.
  • Set Aside & Organize Important Documents – It might sound like a chore, but in the midst of the next few hectic weeks it’s better to be proactive about ensuring you have all of your ducks in a row when it comes to important documents for you and yours. This means medical records, birth certificates, tax documents, school records, and whatever else applies to you. Make sure you keep them in a safe place for your move. Where that is…is up to you!
  • Compare Movers – There’s no two ways about it; you are in what is known as crunch time, being 30 days (or less) away from your move. While we certainly have a horse in this race, we’d encourage you to do your due diligence when determining which moving company is right for you! Look at price point, reviews, services, and experience in your region. If you are moving across the state or country, consider finding a moving company with long-distance moving experience. Keep in mind that Friendly Movers delivers moving boxes, we’ll pack your things for you, we’ll move you, and then we’ll pick up the moving bins and boxes once we are done! We’ll even provide you with a free estimate upon coming to your home or place of business.
  • Pack Your Stuff – Set aside a chunk of time each day (or at least a few times per week) dedicated to simply organizing and packing up your things. Start with items that you know you won’t need in the next thirty days, such as out-of-season clothing, knick knacks, sporting equipment, and whatever else you might not need for the time being.
  • Change Your Address – We are pretty lucky to be able to change important information (such as our address) from the comfort of our own home. These days, we don’t even need desktop computers or laptops to get the job done — just your smartphone will do the trick. Make sure you change your address with all the significant powers that be: USPS, insurance companies, banks, lenders, and any elderly relatives who still happen to be sending you $10 checks in the mail for your birthdays!
  • Contact Your Utility Service Providers – The last significant box to tick is to make sure you notify your utility service providers about your move. This means your cable/internet, water, electric, and waste management providers. Make sure you have access to essential services up until your move. It’s also a good time to make sure you have all of your proverbial ducks in a row regarding your new home and the utilities and services thereof. Take care of it before it gets too late!
