What To Do A Week Before You Move

Friendly Movers are your full service movers whether you are in Boston, Virginia, Connecticut, Washington, DC, Maryland, or elsewhere. We offer local moving services, long-distance moving services, and office moving as well. On top of that, we provide short- and long-term storage solutions for both private and commercial moves. Whether you are moving across town or across the country, we are your friendly moving company full of friendly people here at Friendly Movers!

Because we are so dang friendly, we want to us this blog space as an opportunity to help our prospective customers out with some friendly (and practical) moving advice. In recent posts of the past, we’ve taken the opportunity to provide one and two month moving checklists. If you get the chance, we’d encourage you to go back and read through those blogs — even if the “doomsday clock” is closer than a month away.

However, if your timeline is getting tight and you aren’t sure how to prioritize the final set of tasks you need to accomplish before the big moving day, we’ve got you covered. Heck, we’ll even help you out by reminding you of the most essential things to take care of when you are a week out, or less.

So, sit back, relax (if you can), and take five minutes to peruse this blog and make sure you have all of your bases covered.

DOUBLE CHECK EVERYTHING

If you are using a moving company (like us at Friendly Movers!) it’s a good, no, GREAT idea to double check all of your arrangements with them. This ensures there will be no miscommunications or misunderstandings which could potentially derail your moving day. What’s more, we’d recommend double checking practically everything that has to do with your move — even if your family thinks you are being a bit extra, as the kids say. That means confirming your move in date and time with the “gatekeeper” of your new home, and double checking with anyone else your move’s success is dependent on.

TRANSFER & CLOSE ACCOUNTS

You are probably feeling (a bit more than) a bit stressed at this point, but steal yourself! This is no time to give in! Next up, it’s time to contact your bank and transfer accounts by informing them of your new address for billing purposes. If you have a separate credit card company you use, let them know as well. In fact, shout it from the rooftops so every provider under the sun is aware of your move! Make sure you’ve let your utilities company (including internet and cable) know that you are getting out of Dodge soon as well. Make sure that you’ve paid all bills and that your service cut off dates are established and accurate. It’s no fun to be charged for utilities or internet service after you’ve moved out of that home!

Finally, make sure you close any and all safety deposit boxes that you’ve used in the past. It’s also a good (and, perhaps even necessary) idea to transfer over all medications and prescription you and yours use.

FINISH PACKING

We truly, truly hope that you’ve started packing already. If not, stop reading this blog and get your behind moving! Well, actually, you can finish, but you’d better either be a quick reader or not have very many possessions, because packing takes longer than you think!

Once you’ve got your small and medium-sized items packed, organized, and labeled, it’s time to focus on everything else you need to get in order before your movers arrive. First, we recommend going through every single drawer in the house. For furniture with drawers, we wouldn’t worry too much about any soft (and not too heavy) items. Clothing and blankets are fine to be left as is.

Check all of your closets, storage spaces, attics, cellars, cabinets, and everything else for potentially overlooked possessions. Then think about any precious items you might have loaned out to a friend or left at work.

It might be necessary to dissemble any remaining furniture you have. Some moving companies expect this or charge more if they are the ones to complete this time-consuming task.

If all of that sounds overwhelming at this point, that’s okay. Alternatively, you can let our professional moving company take care of the packing portion of your move as well! We’ll work with you to make sure everything is organized and safely transported — for an affordable fee as well!

PACK YOUR ESSENTIALS KIT

Many people get so preoccupied with the complexity of moving out of their home that they forget to take care of themselves in their new abode! Sure, you’ll be able to drive to a fast food joint and satisfy your hunger, but what about your other essential needs? Make sure you have the following before setting out for your new home:

  • Medications
  • Vitamins
  • Toiletries
  • Bedding
  • Towels
  • Toilet Paper
  • Cleaning Supplies
  • Phone Charger
  • Snacks
  • Plates, utensils, cups, paper towels

It’s also a good idea to make sure that everyone in the family has their own essentials kit . If you have any pets, make sure they have their own food packed away. Mark these essentials kits with a visible label “DO NOT MOVE” to make sure no one takes unnecessary liberties.

DEFROST YOUR FRIDGE

You’ll need to clean out your refrigerator and defrost it a good 24 to 48 hours prior to your leaving the house for the final time. If your refrigerator has an icemaker, you’ll also need to empty the ice container and shut off the water line to your fridge. While you are at it, make sure you unplug all other appliances in the house.

Additionally, make sure you don’t forget to strip your beds, pack up your sheets and comforter, and leave some room in your car for said items! This needs to be done on the last day, so be sure to carve out a bit of time to cover all of your bases before you head out to your new home!
